Simple. I live on a farm. I like to read. I like to tinker. I have a short attention span but a near photgraphic memory for mechanical trivia.
Seriously, most of it I picked up over the course of building street rods, antique trucks, and working in HD "unauthorized" shops since I was 15 years old. I've had HDs, real Indians, real Excelsior Hendersons, multiple Japanese bikes, and the occasional oddball makes like Puch, Jawa, Triumph (unit and pre-unit early Bonnevilles), Hodakas, ad nauseum.
I've never met a stock bike I liked as delivered, and I'm too cheap to pay someone else to do the work for me, except welding, which I'm not all that could at and don't care to learn.
If you want to learn alot about maintaining and customizing bikes, subscribe to Motorcycle Cruiser, Hot Bike, Easyriders, Biker, and Outlaw Biker. Haunt the websites, and don't stick with just Suzuki specific information. You'll pick up more tricks from an hour at Bikernet.com than you'll ever pick up from the metric oriented sites and publications.

PS: The part about tinkering and my memory for mechanical trivia should have actually been in the serious section.
